Michelle, 27 / Baltimore, Maryland / Diagnosed 2016

In March of 2006, I found out I had Type 1 diabetes.

My blood sugar was 670 when I went to the hospital and I had diabetic ketoaciditis. DKA is very
dangerous. When your cells don’t get the energy they need for energy, your body begins to burn
fat which produces keytones. Keytones are chemicals that the bosy creates when it breaks down
fat to use for energy. When keytones build up in the blodd, they make it more acidic. High levels
of keytones can poison the body.

Treatment for DKA usually takes place in the hospital. It is important to learn the warning signs
and checking your urine.
